THE ART OF THE MIXTAPE

Narrative Expression

Embarking on this personal project, I sought to encapsulate my transformative journey through graduate school, weaving together threads of gratitude, music, and graphic design. Inspired by the impact of both design principles and the companionship of music, this project serves as a unique expression of appreciation for the pivotal figures who guided and supported me during this chapter of learning and exploration.

  • At the heart of The Art of the Mixtape lies the concept of crafting audio love letters—personalized cassette tapes for the important individuals who played a crucial role in my success. Each tape is carefully curated with songs that resonate with the shared experiences, memories, and emotions that define our connection.

  • Complementing the auditory journey is a visual exploration through personalized cassette tape covers. Drawing parallels between graphic design and the meticulous process of creating mixtapes, I translate the essence of each person into a visual language. The tape covers serve as a snapshot of my perception, utilizing colors, typography, and imagery to encapsulate the individual’s influence on my academic and personal growth.

  • Because it is the one constant in my life. When I am in a good mood, there is a playlist for that. When I am in a bad mood and just need to cry…there are multiple playlists for that. When I am missing someone or wanting to relive a memory, I can put on a specific song, and I am instantly brought back to that moment or I feel just a little bit closer to that person. Music is powerful. It evokes emotion and fills in the spaces where words or actions are not enough.

  • When I started my research into music and emotion I stumbled on an article about the lost art of making a mixtape. One quote in particular stood out to me. It said, “Curating a collection of songs is an unparalleled way to express how you feel, and when you give someone a mixtape that you have made, you are giving them an audio love letter.” Well, I read this and was hooked; it perfectly described what I wanted to do with this project: express how I feel to those I love through music.

  • My graduate school experience has been profoundly shaped by the incredible people I've met along the way. Initially apprehensive about moving to Savannah without knowing anyone, I almost didn't attend SCAD. However, I'm immensely grateful that I did, as I've encountered some of the most authentic individuals who have supported me throughout my journey. Reflecting on my past fears, I now realize how unfounded they were, and I'm filled with gratitude for the enriching experience I've had.
